Content: This course is a continuation of JPN101. Students will learn
vocabulary, expressions, and sentence structures to become able to meet
basic communication needs in Japanese. All four skills, speaking, listening,
reading, and writing, will be incorporated, and accurate and appropriate
language use will be emphasized. Approximately 90 kanji characters will be
introduced.

Content: This course is a continuation of JPN 201. The course is designed to complete the introduction and practice basic sentence structures and vocabulary in Japanese. More authentic langugae materials will be introduced.

Content: An introduction to aspects of the study of the culture of modern Japan. We will explore such issues as writing and writing systems, gender, memory and history, geography and the environment, science, aesthetics, and the formation of national identity. No background in Japanese studies is required. Special attention will be given to these questions: When is Japanese culture? How do the Japanese view their culture and tradition, and how is it viewed by non-Japanese? How have these views changed throughout history? .

JPN 303: Reading Literature in Japanese Content: The purpose of this class is to help students develop the skills necessary to read Japanese-language texts independently, without the aid of an instructor. Classroom assignments emphasize vocabulary building and kanji recognition, strategies for decoding complex sentence structures, understanding of the nuances of language and literary style, and the use of dictionaries and other reference materials. Students should come out of this class with a sophisticated understanding of the ways in which word choice and tone of expression affect the meaning and intent of the passages studied.

Content: The principal aim of this course is to familiarize students with the range and multiplicity of female voices that emerged in Japanese literature from the Meiji period (beginning 1868) to the 1980s. Students will leave this course with an awareness of the changing social and historical forces that shaped the lives of Japanese women, from the earliest stages of modernization to the country’s emergence as a dominant industrial and cultural power. Wherever possible, gender and literary theoretical methodologies will be brought to discussion of the works, giving students a sophisticated grasp of the philosophical implications of the readings, as well as an understanding of the cultural and historical background of the texts under study.

The objective of this course is to utilize the previously acquired vocabulary and structures to read, discuss, and write reports on aspects of contemporary Japanese society and culture. Students will deepen their cultural understanding and insights through topics discussed in class.
