Major and Minor
I. Japanese Major and Minor Requirements
MAJOR:
Language requirements: JPN 202 and 4 more courses at the 300 and 400 levels (a total of 5 courses). All course progressions must be approved by the programs language coordinator.
Electives: Four electives are required. A minimum of two must be from this list of core courses:
JPN 270WR Introduction to Japanese Culture
JPN 372WR Introduction to Modern Japanese Literature
JPN 378WR Postwar Japan through its Media
The remainder may include other courses with the JPN rubric, including language courses beyond the minimum major language requirements. Electives may also include a maximum of one lecture course taken abroad, or specified Japan-related classes offered in other departments (see list below). Students who are placed beyond 202 will take an equivalent number of electives for a total of 9 courses.
MINOR:
JPN 101, 102, 201, and 202 (or equivalent) and four electives, including language courses beyond the minimum minor language requirements. Electives may also include a maximum of one lecture course taken abroad, or specified Japan-related classes offered in other departments (see list below).

HIST 371 Medieval and Early Modern Japan
HIST 372 History of Modern Japan
No course for the major or minor may be taken S/U. Students must receive at least a C in each course taken for the major or minor.
Language requirements may be fulfilled by demonstrating equivalent mastery of the language through oral and written examination administered by REALC.

HONORS IN JAPANESE
Majors in Japanese with a 3.5 average may choose to participate in the Honors program in their senior year. For Honors in Japanese, students must:
1. Attend all required Honors Program meetings.
2. Select an Honors adviser and committee of 3 faculty, including one member from outside the program.
3. Take two courses: JPN 495A and JPN 495B during their last two semesters at Emory.
4. Complete and present to their committee a substantial work of original research. The work must fulfill all the requirements of the College Honors program. Use of materials in Japanese as well as English is expected.
